hello queens.

this month (march) is women's history month, with international women's day on march 8th.

i love this month because it celebrates women, their contributions to the world (and beyond), their victories, and their fingerprints on the future.

i am a feminist and i'm excited to participate in this month-long victory march and celebration.

women who inspire me

my mom. as you might know, my whole artistry is under the name, gabby michelle.

M I C H E L L E - i chose this name for a really important reason. yes, it's my middle name, and yes, it's a word that pays tribute to my french family and culture which i adore, but it is the name of my mom, the lady who carried me into life and ever since my moment of birth has carried me through life. my mom is my first example of what it means to be an empowered woman, she is one of the driving roots to my feminism, she is a testimony of unconditional and sacrificial and selfless love and demonstrates that in every tiny way. she perseveres, and taught me how to love and accept and respect myself in ways that will have lifetime impact.

my sister. she has a gentle, loving spirit. she has a quiet strength. she is one of the most sefless humans i know. she exemplifies grace, wisdom, and naturalness in ways that are partly (if not entirely) divine. also, she is the same species as me in our quirks, sense of humor, and non-verbal languages. it's both ridiculously comforting and energizing to be around her.

my sisterhood of adopted sisters, the women who are mentors to me, female songwriters and women in the industry, the teachers, educators, librarians, colleagues, and peers i've encountered who are resilient, full of grace, and carry a fire for a brighter world.

a little gabby, momma, and big sister vivi.

some ways you can celebrate and honor this piece of the year are...

learn, explore, study. read some literature on women (i've listed some of my recommendations below).

fill your playlist with female power music, whether those are female artists that inspire you, lyrics that remind women of their gorgeous identity and worth, or any music produced/written/arranged/performed by female musicians (it's a male-dominated industry out here. these women are BOSSES. queens)

have you seen the new wonder woman movie?

if no --> watch it.

if yes --> watch it again.

gal gadot is a real-life superhero, wife, mommy, and activist who portrays diana of the amazons, and the movie is a feminist gem. what i love about it (trying not to spoil anything) is the way power and good/evil are portrayed, and how the good/evil, the weak/strong, and the heroes/damsels are not stuck to a gender.

you can even share your IWD-related art or writing with others!

i've been reading some literature that explores the extraordinarily powerful stories of women.

jesus feminist by sarah bessey

this book shatters stereotypes, stigmas, and assumptions. this book is full of gorgeous words and truths that spill off the page.

bad feminist by roxane gay

this book gives a clever, funny, and bold narrative.

50 women every christian should know by michelle derusha

this is a non-fiction volume of short biographies.

it's so inspiring to meet the radical feminists of, like, the 14th century.

the sun and her flowers by rupi kaur

a collection of poems and illustrations that are simple but transformative. rupi is a wonder.

this book also came out on my favorite day of the year.

the boston public library also put together this lovely list of recommendations for more reading:

what women in your life or in history have inspired you? share below in the comments!

in the words of rupi kaur,

“i stand on the sacrifices

of a million women

before me

thinking

what can i do

to make this mountain taller

so the women after me

can see farther.”

a(wo)men.
